Public speaking is so important to get your message across.

I am fairly positive that you have seen or heard this quote before, but it is so great, it is worth reading over and over again…

“According to most studies, people’s number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you’re better off in the casket than doing the eulogy”. – Jerry Seinfeld

Obviously Jerry was attempting (and succeeding) to be funny, but that is an interesting quote, however, is there any truth behind it?.

I looked into it, to see if it was true – and while the joke is slightly misleading, it does have an element of truth in it.

The study in question, actually just got people to make a list of their fears. So while they may not have been saying they fear public speaking more than death, public speaking WAS however the most mentioned fear that was written down.

So, therefore, don’t be too hard on yourself, knowing that you are not alone with this fear, in realizing that this in its self will help you by acknowledging that’s it’s a common fear amongst people.

If it’s any comfort I have certainly felt like time to time saying to myself ‘I’d rather die’ than go on giving a speech that was not going as well as I had hoped!
